A friend recently wrote "because [a Basic income (BI)] taxes people on how much money they earn or spend or have, and spends it equally on everyone", somehow the BI will not incite "class hatred". However, many households will essentially give back in higher taxes whatever they receive in a BI and a substantial number will give back more than they receive.  The number of non-earners (read: non-taxpayers) and part-time workers will likely skyrocket. They will be supported by the rest of the population, especially households in the top two income quintiles.

This may or may not lead to class "hatred" but I guarantee it will lead to class resentment. From evolutionary psychology, we know about the free rider problem, a problem that would be exacerbated (I predict) to the point of societal dysfunction by a BI.
