Don’t get me wrong: there is a general scientific consensus that climate change is happening. But there’s no consensus on the rate or extent of global warming. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) once pointed out:

“…the complexity of the climate system and the multiple interactions that determine its behaviour impose limitations on our ability to understand fully the future course of Earth’s global climate. There is still an incomplete physical understanding of many components of the climate system and their role in climate change. Key uncertainties include aspects of the roles played by clouds, the cryosphere, the oceans, land use and couplings between climate and biogeochemical cycles.” p. 21

“A proven set of model metrics comparing simulations with observations, that might be used to narrow the range of plausible climate projections, has yet to be developed.”, p. 87

Ok, you say – that was 10 years ago – surely things have gotten better! Not really. Check out the 2013 IPCC report:

 “There is only medium to low confidence in the rate of change of tropospheric warming and its vertical structure. Estimates of tro­pospheric warming rates encompass surface temperature warm­ing rate estimates. There is low confidence in the rate and vertical structure of the stratospheric cooling.” p. 114

 “There is low confidence in projections of many aspects of climate phenomena that influence regional climate change, including changes in amplitude and spatial pattern of modes of climate vari­ability.” p. 115

The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere - it's where our weather happens.  And “low confidence” means a 2 in 10 chance of being correct.

Does that sound like a scientific consensus in the “rate and extent” of global warming?
