What are the criteria for being a bona-fide Climate Change Denier? Let's take Wikipedia as our guide:
“Climate change skepticism" and "climate change denial" refer to denial, dismissal or unwarranted doubt of the scientific consensus on the rate and extent of global warming, its significance, or its connection to human behavior, in whole or in part."
Ok, ‘dismissal’ implies not even taking seriously, rejecting on the face of it. “Denial’ is more interesting. In contemporary usage, it assumes that what is denied is the truth, as in:
Denial: “refusal to acknowledge painful realities, thoughts, or feelings”.
So to be called a denier is already to be told one is in the wrong.
Then we have “unwarranted doubt”, which can mean one of two things: the case is such a slam dunk that any doubt is unwarranted; or, that the doubt better be warranted, meaning it better have some basis in fact.
And what is “the case”, of which one’s doubt better not be unwarranted? Back to Wikipedia:
“…the scientific consensus on the rate and extent of global warming, its significance, or its connection to human behavior, in whole or in part.”
So the case isn’t that human-caused global warming is happening and projected to continue. It’s much, much more than that. And if you don't embrace the entire case, then you may very well be a (gulp) Denier.
