Let's unpack what's so bad about inequality in and of itself. Say we eliminate poverty and create conditions that facilitate individual social mobility*; healthcare is universal; housing is generally affordable; everyone has access to adequate nutrition; education/training expenses are manageable; and there's sufficient leisure time/discretionary income to pursue social, aesthetic and recreational pleasures and partake of community life. In other words, basic needs are taken care of and then some.
Then, if we further subtract out envy, resentment and "just the idea of it", what is it about inequality that is a problem?
