We can only guess at what’s going on in other people’s heads. And even if our educated guess feels spot-on, that doesn’t mean we’ve grasped a person’s essence - only something about them at a particular moment in time. In Walt Whitman’s famous words:
Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself;
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)
Everyone contains multitudes. Therein lies redemption.
Something to remember in this name-calling, demonizing age.
